The 2021/2022 Ski Orienteering season is approaching. With the first Ski Orienteering Event in Finland only a little more than a month away it’s time to review the upcoming season. A season that will feature both IOF European and World Championships as well as the FISU Winter Universiade and World University Championships for student ski orienteers.
Already before Christmas and the new year, from December 11 – 21, 2021, the FISU Winter Universiade Luzern 2021 will take place with Ski Orienteering competitions to be held in Lenzerheide, Switzerland December 13, 15 and 16. The program features sprint, pursuit and sprint relay competitions for student athletes from approximately 20 nations.
From January 21 – 27, 2022 focus will be on Chepelare, Bulgaria and the next IOF major event of the season, the European Ski Orienteering Championships which also features the World Masters Ski Orienteering Championships and the first ever U23 Ski Orienteering Championships. Entry to the event is now open and an important initial entry deadline for masters’ competitors is approaching on November 10, 2021. Medals in the elite classes will be awarded not only to the European champions but also to the worlds best ski orienteers 23 or younger for the first time ever.
Student athletes will have a second opportunity for high level ski orienteering competitions at the FISU World University Ski Orienteering Championships in the Karlovy Vary region of the Czech Republic February 22 – 26.
The main focus of the year and season finale for most will be the World Ski Orienteering Championships, Junior World Ski Orienteering Championships and European Youth Ski Orienteering Championships which will be held in Kemi, Finland March 13-20.
The season will also include a number of World Ranking Events and an for Event Advisers clinic will be held in connection with the European Championships in Bulgaria in January for anyone wanting to increase their knowledge about organising major ski orienteering events.
