The final competitions of the international MTB orienteering season took place today with a mixed relay in the CX80 MTBO World Cup and European MTB Orienteering Championships , and relays in the European Junior and Youth MTB Orienteering Championships.
The Czech team of Veronika Kubinova, Vojtech Ludvik and Krystof Bogar can enjoy the title of European Champions as they won the Mixed Relay competition, 1 1/2 minutes ahead of silver medallists Russia with Olga Shipilova Vinogradova, Ruslan Gritsan and Valeriy Glukhov. The bronze medal was decided in a sprint finish with Lithuanian Ignas Ambrazas finishing a bike-length ahead of Finland’s Juha Lilja.
The 4th place by Finland was just enough for them to secure the CX80 MTBO Team World Cup with 50 points, just one point ahead of Russia. Lithuania’s bronze medal performance meant that they advanced to third in the team standings as well just edging out Denmark. The top 6 was completed by France and the Czech Republic, advancing 2 positions after the win today.
In the Junior and Youth categories there were relay wins to Switzerland, Finland, France and Russia. There were a couple of very close sprint finishes with the finish for the Gold medal in the men’s junior (M20) being the most exciting. Switzerland and Russia finished together and it was only after a few minutes that Switzerland could ultimately be judged the winners. Also the men’s youth class (M17) was decided in a close sprint finish with Spain just edging out Russia to take the final medal.
