A historic Council meeting

The IOF Council held its 6th fully digital meeting of 2021 on Friday November 19th. The meeting was historic as the Council welcomed for the first time 2 elected athletes representatives to the meeting. Foot Orienteering athlete Tereza Janosikova (CZE) and Ski Orienteering athlete Erik Blomgren (SWE) were elected by their peers in the Athletes Commission to be the initial athletes representatives on Council. President Leho Haldna congratulated them on their election and welcomed them to the meeting noting that this was an important step in the continuing development of the IOFs governance.

A summary of some of the decisions from the meeting:

Italy was appointed as the organiser of the World Orienteering Championships (WOC) 2026. WOC 2026 which is a Sprint WOC will be contested in the City of Genova on the Italian riviera. In preparation for WOC, Genova will also host a round in the Orienteering World Cup in 2024, in association with Genova being European Capital of Sport 2024.

Council also interviewed candidates for the IOF Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Secretary General positions, and discussed proposals for changes in the IOF Statutes and revised Strategic Directions in preparation for the 2022 General Assembly. Competition Rules for all disciplines were reviewed and it was decided that these should be finalised by the Council Event Supervisory Board (ESB).
